It was established in 1967 by the Australian Government as a public art gallery to make art more accessible to the Australian people.

The National Gallery of Australia’s collections include more than 100,000 works spread across over 2424m² of display space. It is the largest collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art in the world.

The National Gallery of Australia includes the Childrens Gallery which highlights different exhibitions from the national collection and is dedicated to helping children understand and interpret the artwork in a way that gives them meaning. The gallery is supported by a range of interactive activities designed to engage and stimulate young art lovers.
